CHAPTER 10

A bear.

“You met up with a bear?” Jasper sat wide-eyed with horror as I relayed every last detail of last night’s fiasco over coffee, right here in our cozy little cottage. It’s a small two-bedroom thumbprint of a home with a stone fireplace, yellow and white checkered sofas, and lots of pumpkins and maple leaf garland crowning every free space to remind us it’s the spookiest season of them all.

I’ve always been a sucker for decorating for any holiday, let alone an entire season—thus the twinkle lights, fall leaf border, and mums and pumpkins set out on the front porch as well.

Jasper is already dressed for work, looking dapper in a suit, his hair still dewy from the shower, and his cologne clings to him like a dream.

I give a little shrug. “The good news is, we all came away with our limbs still attached.”

“Always good news.” He toasts me with his coffee. “Especially when my wife’s limbs are involved. So I guess we need to track down Gentry James.” He sets his coffee down and pulls out his phone. “Bizzy, promise me you won’t talk to this man alone.”

Fish mewls from the sofa in the living room, Don’t do it, Bizzy. Make no promises. It’s easier that way when you’re tempted to do whatever your free-thinking mind dictates. Tell him you’ll think about it.

I glance over at her. I certainly understand her concern. But I understand his, too.

“I promise.”

Fish groans, Next, he’ll want to outfit you with a leash.

I shake my head at the thought as I pull out my phone as well, but before I can type a single word into the search engine, Jasper flashes his screen my way.

“Gentry James is the owner of Wolfgang’s Bistro,” he says.

“Now there’s a wolfie name if ever there was one. Maybe he’s the real deal?”

“A werewolf?” Jasper’s brows hike a notch before he reverts back to his phone. “The place is out in Glimmerspell.”

“Ooh, now that just upped the odds of what could be hairy Gentry’s DNA predicament. I love Glimmerspell. I can’t wait for us to go. Hey? Why don’t I ask Billie Buttonwood if she can join us for dinner? I bet she knows Gentry. It’s a small blip of a town just like Cider Cove.”

“Don’t you mean Spider Cove?”

A laugh rumbles from me. “Don’t tell my sister-in-law I slipped up. I don’t want any part of her ire.”

His cheek flickers. “Have you talked to Hux? I’m half-tempted to do a wellness check on the poor guy myself.”

“Not a bad idea,” I say. “I think he would appreciate it from either of us.” I send Billie a quick text asking if she knows Gentry and explain the fact that I need to speak with him regarding a recent homicide. She texts right back. “Ha! Billie said she does know Gentry, that they’re good friends, and she even invited us to dinner at the bistro to speak with him tonight at seven.”

“Say yes.” He picks up my hand and kisses the back of it.
